“ CREATION DOESN'T NEED PURITY BUT SILENCE ”
JOSEP MARIA ESQUIROL
Silences was a one-week project with 6 exhibitions, 3 shows, 4 masterclasses, outings and happeningd in the city led by 15 professionals and artists at a school in Barcelona, Llacuna del Poblenou.
Silences is a project designed by dadàBarcelona and supported by La Llacuna del Poblenou school, which aims to offer children new experiences concerning silence. The project is part of a seires of workshopd for schools which hopes to provide children with another way of looking; it's another small step towards a new way of educating, a tool for development: a brave proposal!
Our proposal is to pave the way to learning and to create balance: silence as a basis for reflection and creativity and also a basis for concentration and relaxation. We also hope to make a useful impression - to be able to read others’ silences and interpret them, to communicate without speech or to create silence on one own.

“ THE DAILY PRACTICE OF SILENCE WILL TRANSFORM NOT ONLY STUDENTS BUT ALSO TEACHERS BECAUSE THEY ARE IN THE SAME REALITY. BY RAISING THE LEVEL OF THINKING IN THE CLASSROOM, UNDERSTANDING CAN GROW AND OFFER EMOTIONAL BALANCE IN THE SPIRITUAL DIMENSION ”
FROM THE VERY BEGINNING THIS PROJECT HAS AIMED TO FAMILIARIZE PRIMARY SCHOOL CHILDREN WITH THE IDEA THAT SILENCE IS NOT SOMETHING IMPOSED BUT A PERSONAL JOURNEY IN AND OF ITSELF:
EACH OF US HAS OUR OWN SILENCE!
WITH THIS STATEMENT AND SOME BROAD DEFINITIONS OF SILENCE WE HAVE BEEN CREATING A WIDE AND ENRICHING ROUTE FOR CHILDREN TO FIND THEIR OWN SILENCES.
TYPES OF SILENCE
The first day we started with the image, represented by the designer Antoni Arola, the set designer Max Glaenzel and the group of artists specialized in temporary installations Penique Productions. Throughout the week the front of the school was operated by Octavian Serra, industrial designer and artist.
On the second day, the children develop silence toward the sound and music. By Sons de Barcelona, a platform for the free exchange of sounds and Lolo & Sosaku a duo of artists who investigate the relationship between music, sculpture and movement.
The third day was dedicated to the movement with dance classes by Lizarrán Helena (dancer and choreographer) and Elena Montes (graduate in dance), yoga with Susana Castro (graduated in dance and yoga teacher) and Anabel Labrador (actress, dancer and performer), performance with Sonia Gómez (dancer, performer and choreographer) and Rocio Manzano (actress and director) and a circus Company Manolo Alcántara.
Thursday, the students will visit different spaces that inspire silence, as CAN FRAMIS, POBLENOU CENTRAL PARK, POBLENOU CEMETERY, THE BRIDGE OF OIL AND and BADALONA BEACH, THE SECULAR CHAPEL OF TÀPIES AT CIUTADELLA, a BUDDHIST CENTER at Montseny, the MONASTERY of St. CECILIA at Montserrat and thePOBLET MONASTERY.
The last day the children will took the initiative and became active agents of silence. At first, there will be an Assemblie by Georgina Oliva (degree in stage direction and dramaturgy), where the experiences through the silence had a space to be shared among children through memory, reflection and suggestion, and where the most important would be unspoken order to move beyond the expression of words.
Secondly, and as a closing action open to the public, we gave way to silence and presence of the school's lagoon with a column consisting of 482 children, 25 teachers and a hundred parents who cross the Poblenou Rambla . It was a silent protest to express rejection to noise that separates the attention, respect, privacy and listening.
In addition to the daily schedule, they also do activities around the food by Pepi de Boissieu, interventions in space by DadàBarcelona, photographic narrative of the week by the photographer Iris Humm and many other collaborators.
